Vista SP1 Released

Vista SP1 Released

Wed, 03/19/2008 - 19:33 — Feature by Jonathan

With a little over a year after release, Microsoft has just released their first service pack update for Windows Vista. You can check out all the changes and bug fixes here.

What does this mean for gamers on Vista? Well not much. My initial testing in Vista still shows a considerable drop in performance as opposed to XP so it would appear Microsoft's "flagship" OS still has kinks to work out before it can be crowned the gamers OS.

If you're interested in getting SP1 right away, open up your windows update and manually install it or if you can wait, SP1 will install automatically sometime in mid-April.

Gamers not a priority

MJB — Mon, 03/24/2008 - 12:32

So what Microsoft is saying, is that its corporate priority is aimed at the non-gaming market. Gamers do not have as much clout as other market segments. Microsoft is basically telling gamers that they will have to be satisfied with XP for a while yet during the period that they seek to satisfy corporate purchasers of Vista. This ignores the hype that Microsoft and others have made regarding DirectX 10 which has been directly aimed at gamers. While new computer consumers do not have much choice in accepting Vista as an operating system, owners of older computer systems are exercising their collective choice not to upgrade yet.

Nor should they, I have

Virago — Mon, 03/24/2008 - 13:10

Nor should they, I have Vista Ultimate at home because it came with my PC when I bought it. At the time I thought that was a good thing and that games would run much better with the upgraded operating system. Instead I'm taking on the same role I did as an XP early adopter which is to give Microsoft a huge bug testing team to experiment with as they fix their problems. And to make matters worse, the gaming market doesn't seem to be their priority although we are probably 99% of their early adopters!
Shame on your MS.

Early Adopters

MJB — Sat, 03/29/2008 - 18:39

As an early adopter, sometimes you expect to have some issues. I recently bought Netgear's EVA8000 which is a media streamer hooking your computer to your television via a network connection. Very early on the product had real issues but Netgear worked closely through its beta forum allowing customers to report issues/bugs and to get early beta releases of firmware updates. This does not mean that there is not a lot of griping on the forum but at least there is someone there listening, taking notes, working with the development team and communicating with the consumers. Stability has improved 100% since my purchase due to the cooperative relationship that has been established between the developer/manufacturer and the consumer. There is give and take which makes everyone more amenable to being patient.

Microsoft may have beta testers but a year after the release of Vista, SP1 demonstrates that gaming is not their priority. Hmmm! How do you spell "Conflict of Interest"? That's right, Microsoft sells the Xbox 360, doesn't it. So what do you think their objective might be?

Just a thought.
